EDUCATION FOR BRIGHT YOUNG GIRLS

ACADEMY - GIRL CHILD SPONSORSHIP

There is an old saying in Africa that goes “Educate a boy you educate a person, educate a girl, you educate a village”. This is why we at RTC MISSIONS stand with the girl child living in poverty to have the capacity to improve their lives and the opportunity to bring lasting change to their communities.

None of us chooses to be born in extreme poverty — including the nearly 400 million of the world’s children who live in the world’s poorest places, where they’re deprived of their basic rights and necessities, excluded from opportunity and vulnerable to harm.

400 million is an awfully big number, too big to tackle. No one person can save that many.

But what if you could help one child?

What if you could help one child save herself?

”SUPER COVER” HEALTH INSURANCE

The RTC Medical Centre manages a program of health insurance for poor families provided by the Kenyan government’s National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) generically know by locals as “SUPER COVER”. The goal of the governments leaders is to eventually provide Universal Health Care (UHC) to all Kenyan citizens. Currently the NHIF is the main health insurer in Kenya, covering 16% of Kenyans, whereas the 32 private health insurers collectively cover a mere 1% of the Kenyan population. While the 16% number is considered low for a national average of coverage even in LMIC’s (Low to Middle Income Countries), the most troubling fact is that this 16% closely mirrors the percentage of public sector workers who are required to have NHIF insurance. This means that the general population is struggling to have health insurance at all.

SUPER COVER is a social-welfare program that provides comprehensive Kenyan government-based health insurance to low-income families. Poor families need protection against the financial consequences of illness and injuries. For most families limited to manual labor and living in LMIC’s illness and injuries still present a permanent threat to their income earning capacity. Besides the direct cost of treatment and drugs, indirect cost for the missing labor for an ill mother has to be shouldered by their children. The SUPER COVER Health Insurance program is the only tool to financing health care and keeping children safe and free from child-labor.

For an annual premium of $100 SUPER COVER provides comprehensive health insurance coverage for a widow and all her children of below 24 years of age living under her care. No deductibles and no copay whenever they visit public or selected private hospitals. $100 is most likely an amount that you could provide without changing your life or lifestyle. But $100 to a poor family that may earn $1.00 per day, or less, would be nearly impossible to accumulate. This is the easiest way for you to change lives in a program you can trust. As an example, just think...$100 per month provides total health insurance coverage for 12 families for an entire year!

SUPPORT WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT

“My sisters in the village used to wonder what would become of us? Thanks to WEP I am now a professional business women!"

At RTC MISSIONS, we know from experience that when we increase incomes and opportunities for women, entire communities, economies, and countries benefit. Providing necessities such as health care and even food rations may not be enough without addressing the root cause of the problem of poverty. Addressing widow’s economic empowerment (W.E.P.) puts them in the driver’s seat of their lives and stops their vulnerability.  It is also a strategic imperative that reduces the cycle of poverty and promotes economic growth, increases access to education and improves health outcomes. Investing in the economic empowerment of women, in all their diversity, builds a resilient society. Because an investment in a woman is an investment in her community and her country.

The Ministry has a long standing commitment to womens economic empowerment through thoughtful and innovative programming. With resources  from well-wishers and partners The Ministry is managing four activities being our pillars of empowerment. These include;

1 Capacity building

2 Seed Capital

3 Employment initiatives through income generating projects

4 Entrepreneurship training in long-term business for success.

Women’s economic empowerment includes any women’s ability to participate equally in existing markets; their access to and control over productive resources, access to decent work, control over their own time, lives and bodies; and increased voice, agency and meaningful participation in economic decision-making at all levels from the household to international institutions. The final result is economic independence and freedom for women and their families.
